Description
Kwa Mulungu means "God's Paradise"
Overview The Islands, which are situated between the Salima and Cape Maclear coastline, provide the best out-door fun possible – scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, bird watching, kayaking, sailing/boating and guided hikes, to name but a few, excursions can also be arranged from the Islands to other National Parks and places of interest both on the Lake and on the mainland.
The Campsite A rustic back-packing campsite is currently in operation on Nankoma and is reached by a short speed-boat transfer from The Cannery at Salima, on the mainland. Grassy lawned terraces are available to pitch your tent on as are communal ablutions (hot and cold water, field showers and eco-toilets), an open-fire cooking area and a well stocked bar "The Soggy Kwacha".
The Lodge The Kwa Mulungu Lodge, which is currently under construction on Maleri, will be the ultimate in bare-foot luxury, rustic yet packed with real African charm. Constructed with the highest eco-friendly architecture principals in mind the Lodge will be made entirely of indigenous timber, thatch and stone.
Accommodation will be in large, luxurious chalets with wooden deck verandas, under thatched roofs overlooking their own private view point of the Lake. There will be a total of 15 chalets, each with its own private viewing deck and hammock – a perfect tranquil retreat. En-suite bathroom facilities will consist of hot and cold water, showers and toilets.
The bush kitchen with its open fire and expert local chef will provide 3 delicious home cooked meals a day.
The Soggy Kwacha At the heart of the campsite is the "The Soggy Kwacha" bar which has been fully stocked with cold refreshments. The bar regularly hosts entertainment and hospitality for social events including fishing competitions, fund-raising functions and scuba diving de-briefs!
Activities
Scuba Diving and Snorkelling As a World Heritage Site the Lake offers some of the most unique freshwater diving available. The experience is kept both personal and private due to the small nature of the resorts based around the Lake and both snorkelling and scuba diving (for those certified) equipment can be hired from the Boat House. Novices can learn to dive in a safe and comfortable environment due to the warm and calm conditions, good visibility and easily accessible dive sites. Divers with more experience will enjoy the Lake for it's abundance of fish (over 5000 species of cichlids – beautifully coloured tropical fish - as well as the famous Malawian “Chambo” which uses the Maleris as it's breeding grounds), many of which are endemic to the Islands only, as well as the opportunity to see the Lake's unusual granite topography, caused by the tectonic movement of the Great Rift Valley, caves and caverns. There is also a wreck or two to explore!
Note: The Lake is 457 metres above sea-level therefore standard decompression tables apply.
Fishing Due to the Islands being part of the Lake Malawi National Park fishing within 100 metres of the Islands can be done on permit, but is strictly on a "catch and release" basis. For the more avid fisherman (or woman!) Kwa Mulungu can offer fishing safaris in any location on the Lake, including in to Mozambique waters as it has a permit to do this (individuals who wish to enter in to Mozambique must arrange their own Mozambique visas in Lilongwe, or at a Mozambique Embassy near them). Fishing in these waters is normally done on ultra light tackle using artificial lures.
Other Activities Kwa Mulungu also offers kayaking, snorkeling, para sailing, boating, bird watching (which is excellent), guided hikes or just relax and recharge those batteries.
Day trips and/or transfers to neighbouring hotels, lodges or places of interest can also be arranged
Environment and Ethics Kwa Mulungu provides much needed employment opportunities for local people, both skilled and unskilled. All meals served are cooked using local produce benefiting the local economy. Kwa Mulungu endeavours to continually support the communities around it and has set up local community trusts which benefit from 5% of accommodation rates earned by Kwa Mulungu as well as 50% of the National Parks' daily fee
Airport Transfers from Lilongwe can be arranged, at an additional cost
