Wood Carvings
Care of Wood Products All fine wood
products need moisture and in the dry climate of a home or business will become
dried out and may crack. To prevent or reduce the chance of damage it is best
to polish wood items at least once a month with a high quality wood polish.
Spray on polishes are not effective as they are used mostly for removing dust
from finished wood and do not add adequate moisture. Africans will often use
matching shoe polish, which not only adds moisture but sheen to woods such as
ebony or mahogany. Rub the polish in using a clean cloth or shoe brush then
buff with a clean soft cloth.
Ebony wood normally is brown on the
outside of the tree; and black on the inside. The carvings often come as a
beautiful mixture of black and brown; as well as the pure black wood that is
most well known.
Soap Stone Carvings
Soapstone carvings, also known
as Kissi stone, are a beautiful way to adorn your home with a smooth, eclectic
look. Made of soapstone found in western Kenya, the Gusii and Abigusii ethnic
groups individually hand carve each of these one of a kind pieces. They first
mine the soapstone from the hills around the village of Tabaka and then, using
knives or handmade tools, the craftsman individually carve each piece. After
the carving the figure is wet sanded and then polished, all by hand. To form
the colors they dye the stone and then incise it with the patterns the
individual artist desires. Adorn your home with one of these traditional, one
of a kind pieces of artwork and display the ingenuity and talent of these
traditional African artisans.

Jewellery Much of African culture places great emphasis
on appearance and therefore on jewelry. African jewelry has been given
tremendous attention for centuries. Own a useful and beautiful part of African
culture now. Many pieces of African jewelry contain cowry shells. They are not
only beautiful but also symbolic!
