Wonbere (amazon.com) - USA Fore-Fote - Audio CD When the
musicians of Fore-Fote and guest artists from Guinea, West Africa got together
to create this CD, the booklet tells us, the experience was so uplifting and
exhilarating they decided to name it "Wonbere" which means "with joy" in the
Susu language. That joy is passed on to the listener in this energizing CD.

The Rough Guide to the Music of Mali & Guinea
(amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Various Artists United culturally
and linguistically since the days of the historic Mande Empire, the
neighbouring West African countries of Mali and Guinea share the rich
traditions of the jeli (or griot) minstrels, kora (African harp) and balafon
(xylophone). This Rough Guide is a celebration of supreme Mande talent,
featuring legendary dance bands, kora maestros, Mali's desert blues and
wassoulou praise singers.
Karamba
Dioubate (amazon.com) - USA Karamba Dioubate - Audio CD
Karamba Dioubate is a jeli (griot) from the West African nation of Guinea
where, like other descendants of this centuries-old Manding caste, he was
drilled in music and oral history from his earliest childhood. His pleasant
baritone has a weathered patina but can also spiral up into the tenor range.
Despite a beguiling hint of Latin hotcha, his sound is a bit more retro overall
than those of his famous countrymen
Paya-Paya

Guitare Seche (amazon.com) - USA Djessou Mory Kante - Audio
CD Djessou Mory Kante's guitar is but one of the voices on this wonderful
recording. Kante and his co-musicians on this album intertwine their rhythmic
yet fluid guitar lines into an intricate, mesmerizing whole that is lively yet
soothing, giving the listener eminently listenable interpretations of some
traditional Guinean songs. (Reviewer: A music fan from Columbus,
Ohio)
Hijas Del Sol (amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Sibeba - Audio CD ...a
captivating sound, laced with radiant vocal harmonies and tender melodies over
a bustling bed of rhythm....They generate honeyed sonorities and earthy beauty,
while telling the not-always-blissful tale of life in a land historically
subject to imperialist rule... (JazzTimes)
Kassa
(amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Sekou Bembeya Diabate - Audio CD
I lived in West Africa for a few years and I used to hear this fellow's
recordings all the time. He is without doubt one of the most popular musicians
in the Mande region (Guinea, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire) and gets tons of airplay over
there--at least as much as Salif Keita, and lots more than Ali Farka Toure. You
can't ride a bus or walk through a crowded market without hearing one of his
tunes eventually. (Reviewer: rudiger from Hoople, ND )
Kchaba (amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Hijas Del Sol - Audio CD For
their third release, the sisters from Equatorial Guinea have beefed up their
spare sound to make some joyous Afro-pop. Although billed as a tribute to the
late Fela Kuti, this CD features his groove-heavy Afro-beat style only on
"Grito Libre."
Arwah (amazon.com) - USA Samir Tahar - Audio CD
Guinea - The Music of the Mandinka (amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Various Artists - Audio CD
Samba Gaye (amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Sekouba Bembeya Diabate - Audio CD
'Samba Gaye' is a brilliant effort from Sekou (Diamond Fingers)
Diabate, the former lead guitarist for Bembeya Jazz International, one of the
foremost dance bands from Guinee which came out of the independence movements
of the 60's. On this recording he is joined by his wife Djanka, one of Salif
Kieta's and Mory Kante's backup singers. There are several excellent
instrumental tracks including my favorite 'Labankognouma'which contains an
explosive guitar rif that I play over and over. (Reviewer: A music fan from
Vancouver, B.C. Canada )
Donsoke
(amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Fode Baro - Audio CD
Discotheque 75 (amazon.com) - USA (amazon.co.uk) - UK Audio CD The usual suspects of
guinean music (Balla, Bembeya, ....)are not present on this album instead the
Syli Authentiique, the Djoli Band, the Super Boiro Band, the Camayenne Sofas and
the Horoya Band prove the breadth of talent in the music, songs like "Andree",
"Sakonke", "Daba", the excellent "Kha Mu Lan Ma" ,"Kulumba" and "Artistes"
celebrate the "Revolution" its leaders and love. The melodies and
instrumentations are superb on this great piece of work. (Reviewer:from Ruston,
Louisiana, USA )
