Description
The construction of this camp has been promoted by “Campamentos solidarios”, a non- profit organization whose main goal is to contribute to sustainable development in areas of extreme poverty. To achieve our aims we are committed to build and maintain working ecological-touristic camps that generate employment and resources for their surrounding areas. They are built and managed together with local people and are based in areas where economic resources are in short supply but with high ecological, ethnic and cultural value.
The choice of this particular place to build a camp was motivated by the fact that Seleki and its surrounding villages are among the last places where you can find “Impluvium” houses. This incredible piece of architecture has led experts to consider the Diola the best architects in Black Africa. The “Impluvium” houses have a circular structure, made with mud walls, and a roof made of wood, cane and straw that slants in towards the interior of the house, forming a large central area where water is collected in a well. Bedrooms are around the perimeter and are reached by a circular corridor. Our intention is to study, display and conserve this exceptional example of African architecture.
In a plot surrounded by huge ceibas, palm trees and baobabs you will find the ten-bedroom “impluvium” house. Each bedroom has two or three beds and an individual bathroom. A large covered wooden porch area is where you can sit and peacefully observe the nearby mangroves.
How To Find Us
The Seleky ecocamp is close to the ‘Kamobeul Bolong’, a branch of the River Casamance, in Lower Casamance . It is reached by a 12km long mud road that starts in the village of Brin, 10km from Ziguinchor, on the road to Oussouye.
